March:
Dr. Winfried Zacher, a Health Consultant
who is helping to establish the Nursing School in Nyangao arrived from
Germany. He presented the Strategic Plan for the Nursing School (chapter
entitled Nursing School).
April:
On 17th April a regional Scientific
Meeting took place in Lindi Regional
Hospital "Highlights in
Neonatology and Pediatrics".
From Nyangao Hospital Dr.
Sandra Subtil, Pediatrician presented topic "The three big killers"
on the three major causes of newborn death, Dr. Stanislous Wambyakale,
Pediatrician presented an "Update on Pediatric HIV/AIDS" and Dr. Ryszard
Jankiewicz, Surgeon presented "Pediatric Surgery in Nyangao Hospital".
Many doctors from neighbouring hospitals participated in the discussions. Next
meeting is planned place for September in Masasi.
On 20th April
the first "Advanced Neonatal Care Seminar" was held at our hospital,
featuring theoretical and practical sessions on neonatal diseases,
resuscitation and triage. 11 doctors and 3 anesthetic nurses enjoyed a
day of interactive learning and productive discussions.
Further seminars are planned
for our nursing staff, as the hospital is getting ready for the opening
of the neonatal care unit later this year.
In one of our staff
premises (St. Tekla) dangerous fire started caused by electrical
fault. Fortunately use of newly posesed fire
extinguishers helped to put out the fire.
May:
Mr. George
Lambert IT Professional from VSO installed in Nyangao Hospital -
hospital information management system and wireless local area network.
20th of May took place a meeting of new appointed Hospital Board of Directors.
May 2013 - A generous donation from Sister Columba on behalf of the
nurses of Daegu Fatima Hospital, South Korea, included 65 boxes of 2cc
syringes and 24 bottles of quinine syrup for use in paediatrics and
neonates.
June:
On 26 of June official
opening of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Outpatient Department (Raphaela)
Pharmacy took place.
July:
OPD Pharmacy after initial period
of sharing place with the
main Hospital Pharmacy has moved to new,
renowed premises.
X-ray Unit received
new ventilation system and new container for the room where are
developed x-ray films.
Thanks to generosity
of Benedictines Prokutator from Germany Br. Dr. Ansgar Stuefe was
possible to establish new, very effective and less expensive than older
one satellite internet connection via new technology system Yahclick.
Continuous education
is taking place during morning meetings almost every Wednesday this time
about blood groups.
September:
A Dutch couple, Ellen Somers Nutricion
Professional and Menno Bakker Medical Doctor, both from VSO joined
hospital staff for period of one year.
After
almost one year break Dr. Daniela Kietzmann, German anesthetist working
in Sweden visited our hospital again and worked with us trained
our anesthetic personnel.
Thanks to her effort hospital received three excellent pulsoximeters as
well as minor anesthetic equipment and surgical materials.

November:
On
the end of this month Dr. Winfried Zacher, Health Consultant from SES

establishment Nursing School in Nyangao Hospital. We are
very grateful for his enormous
help.
December:
A Dutch doctor Djoke
Douma-den Hamer, VSO working formerly in Ndolage Hospital joined our
staff.

Extensive works of construction Nursing
School tutors houses started.
The Australian
benefactors Dave and Kerry Rickards made a fantastic donation for St
Walburg's Hospital: A Glostavent Anaesthesia machine for the obstetric /
gynae theatre and a Baby-CPAP machine including oxygen / compressed air
delivery machine which was recently developed by Diamedica (UK) Ltd.
This Baby bubble CPAP will be able to save premature neonates with RDS
or infants with respiratory distress from pneumonia who are admitted to
the new neonatal ICU. This means a great and important improvement in
the care for the youngest patients at St Walburg's Hospital.
We are extremely grateful for
the donors, Dr. Daniela Kietzmann and UK
company Diamedica Ltd for helping us to receive that very important
equipment.

Events 2014
February.
The first meeting of the Board of Directors for the new nursing
school was held this month.
After a period of long preparation, the first intake included 45
students; 35 male and 10 female.
The official opening celebration of the school is scheduled for
April.
March:
On 8th March, Bishop B. Ngonyani carried out a a blessing
celebration of the new nursing school.
On March
25th, a meeting was held for all staff with Bishop B. Ngonyani,
Vicar General, DMO and representative of RMO. The agenda
included the recent difficulties and challenges with the
hospital management team.
Doctor Bertram Makotha was appointed as the new doctor in
charge. The position of administrator will be held temporarily
by Joseph Njenga, former human resources officer. The post
of acting principal of newly opened Nursing School is held by
Ms.Germane Nkane.
April:
On 11th April, the Nurses and Midwives Board of Tanzania
informed us that Nyangao's Nursing school is officially approved
and can start to operate a normal teaching program.
On 30th May all hospital staff celebrated May Day and the
Florence Nightingale Nurses Day. The four best hospital workers
were presented with awards. From left: Assistant Nurse Bakari
Mnunduma, Nurse Margareth Mpunga, Dr. Sr. Fausta Liundi, and
driver Rainald Mnembuka.
May:
Mr.
James Davies a VSO volunteer who had recently left the hospital,
donated his final salary to buy essential items for the
laboratory.
Donated items with Mr. Mtalika, his successor.
June:
Mr. John Ngondo was appointed as
new Hospital Administrator.
October:
Hospital was visited by group of
12 members of Project C.U.R.E. from USA one of the biggest NGO
distributing medical equipment and materials to over 100
countries. There is a big hope that Nyangao Hospital can be
included to such form of support. The group was invited by
Sr. Raphaela Haendler OSB and RMO from Lindi.
November:
A new appointed President of
Action Medeor from Germany Mr. Sigfrid Thomasen decided to pay
his first visit to Tanzania and to Nyangao Hospital. He is in
Raphael Pharmacy self sustainable unit supporting Nyangao
Hospital which was established with support of Action Medeor.
On November 14
- 16 took place at Amsterdam Symposium on SURGERY IN LOW
RESOURCE SETTINGS organized by Netherlands Society for
International Surgery and Deutsche Gesellshaftfur
Tropenchirurgie. There were 326 participants from 23 countries.
Thanks to invitation from organizers Sr. Dr. Fausta Liundi and
surgeon Dr. R. Jankiewicz get a chance to participate and to
present topics "Practical ideas that facilitate work in St.
Walburg's Hospital Nyangao, Tanzania" and "Why doctors from
western countries should come to work in low resource settings.

December:
Doctor Djoka with her husband Marc
completed their VSO contract and left hospital going to home country Netherlands. Marc who is a paint artist left his picture showing Nyangao
Bondeni, now decorating our library room.
Mr.
Rudi Rottmann Consultant in the field of financial
administration from Senior Expert Service, Germany arrived to
help management of our hospital.
Dr. Samdumar
C. Arias from Phillipines, VSO join our hospital staff and is in
Charge of Pediatric Department.
Our
former Clinical Officer and now after completing study Assistant
Medical Officer Josephine L. Ngonyani start working again with us in
Surgical Department.
On
the first of this month Dr. Masanja Kasoga was appointed by
the Bishop as a Doctor In charge of the Hospital and as his his
Deputy Dr. Bertram Makota
A
new US unit Sonoscape A8 with 2 probes convex and linear arrived
from TTM Germany. It replaced unreperable old Aloka SSD 500 unit.
New unit was financed by Prokurator from St. Ottilien Mission in
Germany Br. Dr. Ansgar Stuefe. A lot of thanks!
Since beginning of
August hospital is sending samples for histology examination to
Regional Hospital in Tychy Poland. It is free of charge charity
action offered by Dr. Zbigniew Antosz . It allow us to exceed former
limits and surprisingly some of results coming back by email after 10 days.
